FAQ 1:What type of samples can I image with GeneFlash?
The system is actually incredibly flexible. It is routinely used with a UV transilluminator for Ethidium bromide gels, but this may be dual wavelength enabling visualisation of Green Fluorescent Protein and many other fluorescent stains such as SYBR Gold, SYBR Green, SYPRO Ruby etc.
There is an optional white light converter screen for visualisation of colorimetric protein gels, colony plates, autorads, flasks etc. A UV to blue light converter may also be used with the system.
An Epi white light offers visualisation of membranes and other non-transmitting samples, although some of these will be better suited to our GeneGenius range.
A filter drawer enabling rapid and simple change of the emission filter gives GeneFlash added flexibility.
If you have a query regarding a specific sample type, please contact us at support@syngene.com
FAQ 2:In the future I may wish to use alternative fluorescent stains like SYBR Green, is the system easily upgradeable?
Yes, there are many lighting options, please see question 1). The unit is also fitted with a sliding filter drawer allowing emission filter changes to be carried out in seconds.
FAQ 3:How can I process my images once I have acquired them?
It is possible to sharpen images or to invert the black and white colours using the simple GeneFlash integral software. For any further processing, quickly save your image as a TIFF or BITMAP to the supplied Compact Flash card [older models] or use the USB port to save images to a memory stick. Images can then be opened by any image processing package or GeneTools for analysis.
FAQ 4:How many images can I fit onto the Compact Flash card [older models only]?
That depends upon the size of card you are using. On the supplied 64MB card you will fit at least 140 images, with a 32MB one you will fit 70.
FAQ 5:We have Macintosh computers only, can I still use the GeneFlash system?
As images from GeneFlash are saved using Compact Flash technology or USB memory stick (older models) these can quickly be transferred to any PC or Macintosh.
FAQ 6:I have heard that Syngene supplies very comprehensive image analysis software with their higher specification gel documentation systems, can this be made available to me as a GeneFlash user?
Yes, all GeneFlash systems, and indeed every imaging system supplied by Syngene, comes complete with at least one copy of our industry leading GeneTools analysis software.
FAQ 7:Do I need a PC to run the GeneFlash?
Not at all, GeneFlash is completely self contained. You will need a PC to run the GeneTools analysis software, however.
FAQ 8:I like the look and cost of GeneFlash, but I really want a PC driven system that I can network, what would you suggest?
GeneFlash can now be networked both with an ethernet and WiFi connections..
FAQ 9:I need to be able to print my images out quickly, is this possible?
GeneFlash links directly to an analogue thermal printer for instant photo quality prints. Once images are transferred to PC or Mac they can be printed to any compatible digital printer.
FAQ 10:Can I upgrade my GeneFlash system for chemiluminescent applications?
No, the GeneFlash darkroom is not suitable for chemiluminescence. If you think you have a future requirement for this application, please talk to us about our G:BOX Chemi range of products.
FAQ 11:I never have a requirement to save my images, can I buy a version of the GeneFlash without the USB port
The port is not removable.
FAQ 12:Safety is paramount in our laboratory, is it possible for my colleagues to accidentally expose themselves to UV irradiation using GeneFlash?
No, GeneFlash is a very safe system. Whenever the door is opened the UV light is automatically extinguished. It is possible to override this function, but on a ‘once only’ basis, i.e.: the next user cannot be accidentally exposed without knowingly setting the override themselves.
FAQ 13:Can I cut out bands of DNA from my gel using the GeneFlash?
Yes, it is a very simple process to override the UV safety cut off. This is achieved by pulling down a switch. You must ensure that you are wearing appropriate UV protection then proceed to cut out your band in the normal fashion. You may pull the transilluminator out of the cabinet for ease of use or by setting the camera to “live” you can view what you are doing on the LCD screen.
FAQ 14:Will GeneFlash print the date and time of my images on the printouts?
Yes, there is an option in the software for this feature.
FAQ 15:Can I upgrade the software on my GeneFlash system?
Yes, in common with all software written in-house here at Syngene, we do not expect the customer to pay for upgrades. These are provided free of charge for the lifetime of your system. For the GeneFlash, you can download the latest software from our web site and upgrade in one simple step.
